What does the fall season mean to you?
To me it means spending time with my family. We love visiting the local pumpkin farms here in western New York. They usually have hayrides, corn mazes, and the biggest pumpkins I’ve ever seen. Oh, and I can’t forget the warm apple cider and apple cinnamon doughnuts. (OMG I’m making myself hungry.)
Fall also means better fashion. Now that that temperatures are dropping, I can wear my favorite knee high boots and wear layers! Warm-weather clothing is just more fun, IMHO.
Fall means organizing because I will always associate it with back-to-school time and getting new school supplies.
Additionally, fall means decorating the house with fun, warm accessories. I love filling my space with candles scented with a nice mixture of sweet and spice. Don’t forget the cozy throw blankets and extra pillows too.
Pumpkin Spice Latte
I try to avoid going to Starbucks too much because frankly, it’s expensive! Also, I have zero willpower when it comes to avoiding the high calorie stuff. Every once in a while I treat myself, but for the most part I try to avoid it.
BUT the basic b*#@ in me still wants that Pumpkin Spice Latte!
I found a cool recipe for easy, homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte over at Divas Can Cook.
I’ve made this drink at home a couple of times already.
This recipe did not disappoint! It was yummy and it saved me some money. The calories however… well, we just won’t talk about that.
These are my tried and true boots. They are Doc Marten’s and are built to last. I’ve had mine for about five years now and I wear them almost daily during the cooler months. They are awesome for stomping through soggy leaves and wet grass.
Sometimes I don’t get a chance to change out of my gym clothes into my regular clothes.
On those days I opt for my Fabletics leggings because they have a high waist (to keep my mom-roll in check) and I don’t have to worry about sheerness when I bend over.
They have some beautiful jewel tone prints right now, perfect for cooler days.
I’ve tried a lot of leggings throughout the years. These are some of my favorites.
Fall Home Decor
One of my favorite scents for Fall is Yankee Candle’s Autumn Wreath.
This has a warm, comfy smell with a slightly spicy undertone.
I find that I can use this scent from September all the way into December. I do substitute a few weeks in October with Witches Brew, my second favorite Yankee Candle scent. 🎃
Bath and Body Works also has a really nice fall scent. It’s called Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin. I have a wallflower of that one right now in my entryway and it smells sooooo good.
If you love that fall smell in your house but want a more natural way to achieve it, check out this post from the Martha Stewart blog about how to make your own pumpkin pie potpourri.
You can also put a pan of apple juice, whole cloves, and pumpkin pie spice on the stove to simmer. That’s a cheap and quick way to make your home smell amazing.
I will always associate the fall with back-to-school, even though nowadays kids go back practically in the middle of summer!
Yet I still think about new organizing projects during the fall months. It just feels like a new beginning to me.
This year I’m doing more of my work in my office on campus than I used to. This means that I now have things I need and use scattered all over my house and all over my office…. oh. joy.
One hiccup I’ve run into is lugging my heavy laptop to and from work.
This wouldn’t be a big deal if I worked at a normal office, but I work at a large state university. That means I have to walk about half a mile from my car to my office.
By the time I get in, my shoulder hurts from lugging my lunchbox, heavy purse, and bag with my laptop and two or three books. I know it all weighs more than 50 lbs because if I put all of it in my passenger seat in the car, the car won’t let me drive because it thinks there’s someone sitting in it without their seat belt!
To solve this, I’m trying a few things.
First, I’m trying to store more of my files on Google Drive. That way, I can work on some things using the work computer. This may allow me to leave my laptop at home a few days a week.
Honestly, this isn’t ideal because my work computer is ancient and sloooooow. But, it’s an option.
Also, I have the added bonus of having my files “live” on the web. So that way if my bag breaks and my laptop tumbles into a puddle of water, I haven’t lost all my work. (Ugh, I get sick thinking about that.)
Some people love using digital planning apps like Evernote. I’ve never gotten used to Evernote but I think I’m going to look into it a little bit. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Most of the fall home accents and decorations are already on sale. Ebates has had some really great cashback deals on fall related merchandise.
Kmart has a lot of their fall decorations on sale HERE. I live very close to a Kmart and can attest that they’ve upped their game in recent years. They seem to be doing a better job with competing against Target when it comes to home accessories.
And Swagbucks also offers deals on ANYTHING you may be looking for.
I don’t know about you, but when life gets stressful and busy one of the first things that I absentmindedly give up is my reading time.
I realized just the other day that I had not read a book just for fun in months! I don’t have a lot of time to just sit down and read right now, so I’ve started listening to audio books.
Right now you can get two free books through Audible with a 30 day free trial. So jump on that! If you’ve already done your free trial, but aren’t paying the monthly subscription (like me), there are ways to get audiobooks for cheap or free. I just downloaded Jane Austen’s Emma with Whispersync for two dollars!
So now I have the kindle print book and the audiobook too.
Honestly, my mood has lifted so much by just listening to an audiobook on my commute to and from work. Those 30 to 40 minutes a day of just checking-out a little are really making a difference. Instead of thinking about things I have to do, projects I’m working on, etc. I’m zoning out and letting someone else entertain me a little.
So? What about you? What do you think of fall?
I know a lot of people think it’s completely overrated. I know I used to feel that way when we lived down South. Now however, I can’t get enough of it! The second those leaves start changing, I’m busting out all of the fall goodies.
Lemme know what you think in the comments below!
